 JUNIOR ARCHERY

Welcome to Junior Archery at the Barrie Gun Club

The Governing Body of our junior archery program at the Barrie Gun Club is the Federation of Canadian Archers (FCA).

For those wishing it, the FCA Canbow Skill Awards program is available to all junior members. This program affords the junior archer an opportunity to achieve success and recognition by earning badges through a 4 level acquisition program.

For those not wishing to be in the Canbow Skill program, the program we offer is geared toward young people up to eighteen years in age and our primary goals are as follows:

  • Promote and practice safe procedures in the sport of Archery

  • Teach and encourage proper techniques

  • Foster in each archer the desire for self-improvement

  • And have fun

Our program is mainly run by parent volunteers. Their contributions in time and effort make the program what it is today.  And though this is a junior program, our parent volunteers are every bit as keen on the sport, as are the children.

Every Saturday afternoon from 12 noon to 3:30 pm, except the first Saturday of the month, the range is open to the archers. The youngsters are taught, according to age, to use the long bow, the recurve bow, and the compound bow. Varied shooting events are staged throughout the season: one week we could be doing a fun shoot; the next could be a tournament; and on another weekend, Canbow testing or just regular shooting may be on the menu.
During the winter months or in poor weather we convene inside on the indoor range.  Through the fall, spring and early summer months the archers look forward to being outside on the 3D range, which involves moving through the forest, sighting targets at varying ranges, and shooting to test the individual's ranging and accuracy skills.

Three to four times a year we host open tournaments.  Usually staged on a Saturday, these tournaments begin around 9:00 am and conclude about 1 pm.  Tournaments conclude with a BBQ lunch and the presentation of awards.  All children participating receive an award.

Once a month, we try to stage a fun shoot that is open to all our junior members. These fun shoots often employ themes offering out of the ordinary challenges for our shooters.  All children participating receive a goody bag as well as a fun gift.
